Biography

Arkady Pikunov is a saxophonist, composer, laureate of All-Russian and International competitions, teacher.

Arkady was born in 1997 in Tarko-Sale, Russia. He began studying music at the age of 13. He decided that music is an essential part of his life after meeting with the records of the world’s best musicians of the last century such as Freddie Mercury, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane.

In 2013 Arkady entered the Moscow Regional Music College named after Sergei Prokofiev where he began to make acquaintance with the academic saxophone.

He was studying in the classroom of laureate of all-Russian and International competitions, Vladimir Ustyantsev.

Arkady combines studying in College with taking part in master classes of the leading saxophonists of the 21st century, among them: Arno Bornkamp (Netherlands), Jean-Denis Misha (France), Lily Rusanova (Germany), Sergey Kolesov (Russia), Asya Fateyeva (Germany, France, Ukraine), Koryun Asatryan (Germany), Nikita Zimin (Russia, France), Vitaly Vatulya (Russia, Netherlands), Evgeny Novikov (Russia, Netherlands),Michael Krenn (Austria), Leonid Drutin (Russia) and Margarita Shaposhnikova (Russia).

In 2014 he met with prominent French saxophonist and composer Jean-Denis Misha, who has had great influence on forming the creative personality of Arcady.

Many-sided masterly performance of Jean-Denis which was achieved thanks to the composition studies inspired Arkady to assimilate the new kind of activity. Trying to learn how to express what he feels by way of his own musical composition he began to study under the direction of Elena Staseeva (graduated from the Moscow Conservatory) – teacher of theoretical disciplines, composition and improvisation.

Soon he gains the first victories in this field. Arkady won the 2nd degree of all-Russian competition of composition, improvisation and music journalism named after S. S. Prokofiev

(Pushkino, 2016) and became the top prize winner of the 3rd all-Russian competition “The Young composer” named after M. M. Ippolitov-Ivanov (Moscow, 2017).

Arkady writes mostly instrumental music; his compositions include many pieces for saxophone in which he attaches great importance to the images, emotional state and truthfulness. He is constantly experimenting in his attempts to find something new and unusual.

Taking part in composer`s competition in 2016 Arkady simultaneously became a silver medal winner in nomination “The Saxophone” at the Fifteenth Youth Delphic games of Russia which took place in Tyumen.

Nowadays Arkady Pikunov is a student of the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music under direction of professor, holder of the title “People’s Artist of Russia” Margarita Shaposhnikova.

He combines teaching and performing, organizes his own solo concerts. Arkady is the endorser of the restoration and production centre for brass instruments «Atelier Goncharov» and one of the representatives of the sports movement “More than gold”. He is also a permanent member of the project “Newton Music Studios” and Prokofiev`s saxophone Quartet.
